PUREEF-Y completes first seasonal fieldwork across Cyprus

From 27 January to 1 February 2025, the PUREEF-Y research team successfully conducted its first seasonal fieldwork across key coastal locations in the areas of Ayia Napa, Latsi, and Kato Pyrgos, Cyprus.

During the fieldwork, researchers carried out detailed environmental surveys (intertidal, subtidal and physicochemical surveys), collecting crucial data to enhance our understanding of the state of marine ecosystems in Cypriot waters. These findings will play a vital role in shaping monitoring efforts and conservation strategies for the protection and restoration of marine biodiversity.

The fieldwork brought together researchers from all consortium partners, namely the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR), fostering capacity building through hands-on training for scientists at the CMMI. This visit set the team up for future field studies, ensuring that future field studies proceed with enhanced expertise and methodology.

This milestone marks a significant step in our efforts to assess the impacts of marine heatwaves and pollutants on regional marine ecosystems. As the project progresses, PUREEF-Y remains committed to delivering scientific insights that drive sustainable marine management.
